SAN FRANCISCO | Workplace technology is moving beyond experimentation and into the harder phase of management: deciding where tools actually help, where they create risk, and how employees should be trained to use them responsibly.
Artificial intelligence, automation, collaboration platforms and data analytics can help companies summarize information, improve workflows, support customer service and reduce repetitive tasks. But the same tools can create new exposure if sensitive information is mishandled, automated outputs are treated as unquestioned fact, or employees are asked to use systems without clear rules.
NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework encourages organizations to manage AI risks in a structured way, including governance, mapping, measurement and management. Cybersecurity guidance from federal agencies also underscores that digital adoption has to be paired with protection of systems and data.
The business case is no longer only about buying software. Companies need policies for data use, human review, employee training, vendor risk, cybersecurity, accessibility and recordkeeping. They also need to separate measurable productivity improvements from marketing claims about what a tool can do.
For workers, the question is whether tools make work clearer and safer or merely faster and more monitored. For employers, the question is whether technology investments produce durable value without weakening trust, privacy or accountability.
