OPINION | The education debate around technology keeps drifting toward extremes. One side talks as if every new tool will save the classroom. The other talks as if every screen is an enemy. Students deserve better than both slogans.
Technology can help a student who needs practice, translation, accessibility support, tutoring, research tools or a different way to understand a hard concept. It can also distract, flatten attention, encourage shortcuts, widen inequality and turn classrooms into experiments run on children before adults fully understand the tradeoffs.
That is why the future of education should not be built around the question, “How much technology can we add?” It should be built around a better question: “What helps students become more capable, more thoughtful and more human?”
Pew Research Center has found that teens are already using AI in school and daily life. UNESCO has urged education systems to think seriously about digital and AI competency, human agency, ethics and critical thinking. Those are not abstract concerns. They are the difference between students using tools and tools using students.
A school that bans every tool may leave students unprepared for the world they will enter. A school that welcomes every tool without rules may teach students to outsource their thinking. The goal should be neither fear nor worship. It should be judgment.
Teachers should not be expected to solve this alone. Many already face crowded classrooms, paperwork, behavior challenges, parent communication, testing pressure and uneven access to resources. If a district tells teachers to use AI or digital platforms, it also has to provide training, guardrails, time and technical support.
Students also need honesty. AI can summarize, explain and brainstorm. It can also be wrong, overconfident and shallow. A chatbot answer can sound polished while missing the point. A student who never learns to question the machine is not being educated. A student who learns to challenge it, verify it and use it responsibly is building a modern skill.
Equity has to stay in the center. Digital learning sounds empowering until one student has high-speed internet, a quiet room and a new laptop while another has a cracked phone and no reliable connection. If schools require digital work, they must account for the homework gap. Otherwise technology becomes another way poverty marks a child’s performance.
Parents deserve a clearer role too. Many families are trying to understand what their children are using, what data is collected, whether tools are safe and whether AI help crosses into cheating. Schools should not bury those answers in long vendor documents. They should explain plainly what tools are used, why they are used and how student information is protected.
There is also a deeper cultural question. Education is not only content delivery. It is conversation, patience, frustration, discipline, social growth, disagreement and discovery. A student learns by doing hard things, not only by receiving finished answers. If technology removes every hard part, it may remove the part where growth happens.
That does not mean classrooms should reject innovation. It means innovation should be judged by whether it strengthens learning. A reading app that helps a struggling student practice can be valuable. A math tool that shows steps can be valuable. A research assistant that helps students compare sources can be valuable. But a system that simply produces essays, grades children invisibly or replaces teacher judgment should face tougher scrutiny.
The best use of technology is often quiet. It gives a teacher better information. It helps a student with a disability access the material. It makes feedback faster. It helps families communicate. It allows a rural student to take a course their school cannot otherwise offer. Those are real benefits.
The worst use is performative. A district buys a platform to look modern. A company promises transformation. A classroom fills with dashboards, logins and subscriptions, but students do not read better, think harder or feel more connected. That is not progress. That is procurement.
The question for the next few years is whether schools can build digital maturity faster than technology companies build dependency. Students should learn how AI works, where it fails, how to check its claims, how bias enters systems, how privacy matters and why original thinking still matters.
We should also stop pretending that every concern is anti-technology. A parent who worries about screen time is not backward. A teacher who questions AI essays is not afraid of the future. A student who wants human feedback is not inefficient. Those concerns are part of designing better tools.
The future of education should include technology, but it should not surrender to it. A good school should use digital tools the way a good newsroom uses them: with purpose, skepticism, source checks, human judgment and a clear understanding that speed is not the same as wisdom.
If technology serves students, it can widen access and deepen learning. If students are forced to serve technology, the classroom becomes a marketplace of distractions. The choice is still ours, and it should be made carefully.
Part of the challenge is that adults are still learning too. Many parents did not grow up with generative AI. Many teachers were trained before these tools existed. Many administrators are trying to set policies while vendors are already selling solutions.
That creates a dangerous vacuum. If schools do not teach responsible use, students will still use the tools. They will just learn from peers, platforms and whatever shortcut works the night before an assignment is due.
Responsible use should include permission and limits. A student might be allowed to use AI to brainstorm questions but not write the final essay. They might use it to explain a math concept but still show their own work. Clarity matters.
Schools should also preserve spaces where technology is not the point. Reading a book without interruption, writing by hand, debating in class, building something physical and listening to another person are not outdated activities. They are core human skills.
The privacy question deserves more attention than it gets. Student data should not become a training resource by accident. Families should know whether tools store prompts, profiles, grades or behavioral information.
Education technology should also be judged by evidence, not sales language. If a platform claims to improve learning, districts should ask how that was measured, for whom it worked and whether the benefits justify the cost.
Teachers should remain central because learning is relational. A tool can explain a concept, but it cannot fully understand a child’s confidence, frustration, home life, humor or potential. Good teachers see more than data points.
Students need the right to be more than users. They should be part of conversations about classroom tools, AI policies and digital expectations. Young people often understand the benefits and harms more clearly than adults expect.
Technology also affects attention. Schools should be honest that constant switching, alerts and short-form habits can make deep work harder. Digital literacy should include the discipline to disconnect.
The goal should be graduates who can use tools without being ruled by them. That is a civic skill, a workplace skill and a personal skill. Education should prepare students for technology, but also protect the part of them that thinks beyond it.
