WASHINGTON | The opening event for America’s 250th-anniversary celebration is now part civic ceremony, part political test.
The Associated Press reported that President Donald Trump headlined the National Mall kickoff with rally-style messaging, patriotic displays and a crowd of supporters. AP-NORC polling separately shows Americans approaching the anniversary with mixed emotions, including pride, excitement, conflict and indifference.
That split is the core politics story. The semiquincentennial can unify communities around history, service and local memory, but the national launch also gives the president a powerful stage during a midterm year.
CGN News will follow whether state and local commemorations emphasize broad civic participation or become extensions of national partisan messaging.
