INDIANAPOLIS | Central Indiana moved into a cooler and drier air mass Wednesday evening after a cold front pushed showers out of the region, leaving breezy conditions and a more comfortable stretch before rain chances return late in the week.

The National Weather Service Indianapolis office said in its area forecast discussion that showers would end as the cold front exited central Indiana, with strong northwesterly winds bringing cooler and drier air through Friday. The office’s key messages called for dry and seasonable weather through early Friday, followed by daily rain chances beginning Friday and continuing into next week.

For Marion County, the National Weather Service forecast called for partly sunny conditions Wednesday afternoon with a high near 67°F and north winds around 15 mph, including gusts as high as 25 mph. Wednesday night was expected to turn mostly cloudy before gradually clearing, with a low around 44°F and north-northwest winds easing overnight.

Thursday looks like the quietest day in the near term. The forecast calls for sunny conditions and a high near 69°F, followed by a mostly clear Thursday night with a low around 47°F. That gives Indianapolis a useful break for commuting, school activities, outdoor work and Indianapolis 500 practice-week planning.

Rain chances return Friday. The National Weather Service forecast listed a 40 percent chance of showers Friday, with partly sunny skies, a high near 73°F and south winds gusting up to around 21 mph. A chance of showers and thunderstorms continues Friday night, with additional rain and thunderstorm chances through the weekend.

The weekend trend is warmer. The National Weather Service discussion said much warmer conditions are expected this weekend, with the first 90°F day of the year possible next week. That does not mean every location will reach that level, but it signals a sharp transition from Wednesday’s cooler, breezy feel into a warmer and more humid pattern.

For readers, this is not a severe-weather alert. The current story is a routine spring transition: a cooler evening, a calmer Thursday, then increasing rain chances and a warmer setup. Anyone with outdoor plans Friday through the weekend should keep checking the forecast because shower and thunderstorm timing can shift as the front stalls near the region.

Drivers should use extra care on wet roads if showers return Friday. Event planners should treat Thursday as the more reliable outdoor day and build backup plans for Friday and Saturday. Those sensitive to rapid temperature swings should also note the move from a cool Wednesday night to warmer weekend highs.
