INDIANAPOLIS | Flood warnings continue along parts of the lower White River in southwest Indiana after heavy rainfall from last week kept water levels elevated near Petersburg and Hazleton.
The National Weather Service in Indianapolis said minor flooding is occurring or forecast along the lower White River. The warning for the White River at Petersburg remains in effect until Thursday afternoon and includes portions of Daviess, Gibson, Knox and Pike counties. At Petersburg, NWS said the river stage was 19.0 feet Tuesday night, above the 16.0-foot flood stage.
A separate warning for the White River at Hazleton remains in effect until late Friday evening and includes portions of Gibson and Knox counties. NWS said minor flooding is forecast there, with most low bottomlands affected at 20.0 feet and some roads, cabins and nearby low-lying areas potentially affected.
Residents near flood-prone roads, low bottomlands, river cabins and agricultural areas should use caution and avoid driving through water-covered roadways. The National Weather Service reminds drivers to turn around when encountering flooded roads because most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
The next NWS statement was expected Wednesday afternoon. Residents in affected areas should monitor official updates from the National Weather Service, local emergency management and county officials.
