INDIANAPOLIS | Indianapolis gets a quieter Saturday with clouds giving way to some sun, but the weekend forecast turns more active Sunday as showers, thunderstorms and heavy rain return to central Indiana.

Saturday

The National Weather Service point forecast for Indianapolis calls for isolated showers before noon, followed by cloudy skies gradually becoming mostly sunny. The high should reach near 80°F.

West winds should run 5 to 9 mph. The chance of precipitation is 20% during the morning, with the afternoon trending drier for outdoor plans.

Saturday night

Saturday night should be partly cloudy with a low around 60°F. West-northwest winds near 6 mph should become calm during the evening.

The Hazardous Weather Outlook says no hazardous weather is expected today or tonight, so Indianapolis does not have a Saturday severe-storm setup at this time.

Sunday

Sunday starts with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers become likely with a possible thunderstorm after 5 p.m. Skies should become increasingly cloudy, with a high near 80°F.

Calm wind should become southeast at 5 to 8 mph during the afternoon. Rainfall amounts between one-quarter and one-half inch are possible during the day.

Sunday night

Sunday night is the main trouble period. Showers and possibly a thunderstorm are expected, and some storms could produce heavy rainfall. The low should be around 64°F.

Southeast winds of 10 to 14 mph should become southwest after midnight, with gusts as high as 24 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100%, with 1 to 2 inches of rain possible.

Monday

Showers continue Monday, with thunderstorms possible after 2 p.m. The high should be near 76°F.

North winds of 8 to 10 mph may gust as high as 18 mph. Rainfall should generally be light, but storms can produce higher amounts.

Tuesday through Friday

Tuesday should turn sunny with a high near 78°F and a low near 60°F Tuesday night. Wednesday should be mostly sunny early, with a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. and a high near 79°F.

Wednesday night, Thursday and Friday each carry a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms, but the overall pattern looks less disruptive than Sunday night. Highs should stay in the upper 70s.

Flooding and safety

Minor river flooding continues in parts of Indiana, including portions of the Wabash River basin and East Fork White River. The Sunday rain could increase current minor river flooding and cause localized flooding where storms repeatedly cross the same area.

Never drive through water covering a road. Move indoors when thunder is heard, and keep alerts enabled Sunday afternoon through Sunday night.

What This Means

Saturday is the best immediate outdoor window, with only isolated morning showers and a high near 80°F.

Sunday afternoon through Sunday night is the period to watch. Heavy rain and thunderstorms may affect travel, outdoor events and river flooding across parts of Indiana.
